On the possibilities of future theater Borderless from every perspective

Look through the “archive”
The past and present of performing arts

The theme for the first part of a series of symposiums to be held at THETRE E9 KYOTO on 2024/1/9 is “About archival projects.” It is also a project to invite various guests, such as critics and experts, to look back on the past of performing arts, and at the same time create opportunities for feedback and utilization for young artists and future researchers who will lead the next generation. After all, its strength is the valuable digital archives of recorded videos and public relations materials that have been accumulated together with Kyoto City University of Art since THETRE E9 KYOTO, which is celebrating its 5th anniversary this year. While unearthing the past of theater in Kyoto and by extension, based on these, it is an opportunity to think borderlessly about the possibilities of current and future theater from all perspectives.

From THETRE E9 KYOTO, which is celebrating its 5th anniversary
Visioning the next 10 years across generations

Although the positioning of the novel coronavirus has moved to category 5, damage in the performing arts has entered a new phase due to the lifting of safety nets, etc. In particular, the influence on the younger generation, such as student theater and groups during the flag raising period, is significant, and it is an issue directly linked to the future of the theater world. Precisely because of this situation, I would like to once again visualize the issues that have arisen through the coronavirus by young actors having a point of contact with history, and connect it to “soil creation” leading to the future of performing arts in Kyoto and Kansai. With that in mind, the second series of symposiums “On the History of Theatre in Kyoto and Kansai” will be held. As well as the younger generation, the previous generation will participate together to look forward to the industry for the next 10 years with horizontal connections. It seems to be an opportunity for Kansai performing arts to work together across generations and genres to aim for “creating new customers.”
