Expanding by knowing how to read plays, How to enjoy theater

Participants' theatrical experience is not required. I want students to participate

A workshop hosted by the theater planning group “Office Project M” centered on playwright, director, actor, and producer Satoshi Maruo. While deciphering the play “Rokumeikan” (first performed in 1956) by Yukio Mishima over 4 days, it is a project that includes not only conveying basic ways to read the play, but also the desire to expand the way people enjoy theater and use it as a starting point for watching the theater.
We want both creators and viewers to participate, so no theatrical experience is required for participants. Furthermore, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, opportunities for student theater activities have decreased, and there are years where theater appreciation parties as school events could not be held, so they are also calling for participation from high school drama clubs and university drama circles, saying “I want to provide opportunities for young people to come into contact with theater.”

A step leading to cultivating the theater world

The reason I chose “Rokumeikan” by Yukio Mishima from a number of plays was that, in addition to the fun of the play itself, it was also triggered by voices from Hiroshima performers who served as the venue saying “I don't know how to read” plays called classics or masterpieces with different historical backgrounds and cultures. Compared to Europe and America, it seems that the pace at which new plays are announced is faster in Japan, and “I don't know how to read it = they won't perform” mentioned above is probably one of the reasons. In that case, “the fun of watching the same play” does not automatically penetrate into the audience. Now, re-deciphering a play written nearly 70 years ago, and knowing the point of view of how fun it is to ask questions and discuss it, and where to pay attention if it were to be performed now, seems to be a step that will lead to once again increasing and nurturing the possibilities of theater.
