A hand drawing workshop for 4th graders and above by the theater company “Gekidan Kakashiza” (founded in 1952), which was the first in Japan to specialize in contemporary shadow painting. Speaking of hand shadows, crabs and foxes are familiar, but in fact, they learn that they can express even more, practice, and even present performances.
Shadow play, which is familiar to children in the Showa era, and opportunities for modern children to play with shadows have also declined in the midst of changes in the times, such as indoor lighting being replaced by fluorescent lights.
However, for children, the creative world that can be created with just one body is familiar yet stimulates curiosity and sensitivity. At the workshop, shadows are created using the light of a projector, but it can be done with sunlight or a flashlight, etc., so once you open this door, the rest is a “type of play” that can be deepened as much as the child's imagination.
One reason why Scarecrow, who has been working in hand shadow painting workshops for over 20 years, applied for the Art Caravan Satellite this time is that they want to do activities in an area that they usually can't easily go to due to income and expenditure. Also, there is a desire that groups participating in the “Japanese Drama” Future Project know about the existence of theater companies that target children and young people.
Theater companies for children and youth are mainly active in schools, etc., so there are few opportunities to touch them, but in reality, there are so many performances, and Scarecrow also performed 700 stages a year before COVID-19.
This workshop was born from both the desire to “show that such a theater company exists and can contribute to the theater world” and the desire to develop children's imagination.
